Corporate Social Responsibility- An Initiative By GKB Opticals
What is Corporate Social Responsibility?
The Corporate Social Responsibility, can be defined as the responsibility of the enterprises and their commitment to contribute to the economic development while improving the quality of life for the employees and their families as well as the community and society at large.
GKB Opticals CSR activities
GKB Opticals, being a stalwart in vision care and eye- wear, has started the CSR activities since September, 2014, with an objective of ensuring that every individual from the underprivileged background of the society receive equal access to eye care.
To fulfill the objective, we have started the CSR activities based on vision correction, whereby we reach out to a number of individuals (both children and adults) belonging to the economically marginalized sections of the society and provide them free eye- screening and free spectacles, if required. In partnership with schools and grass root level NGOs, we conduct the eye- camps, based on vision correction in their project premises. In the camp, free eye- check up is provided to the target people from economically backward families and a pair of spectacles is provided to those people, who require require vision correction.
Eye- Protection Camp
We also conduct eye- protection camp, where free sunglasses are donated to the underprivileged people.
Achievements through CSR
We have been able to touch the lives of 11,909 individuals through 126 eye-camps in between September 2014 to March 2016. We have donated 4,695 spectacles to the ones who require vision correction.
We have been successful in reaching out to the communities in urban slums, rural areas, tribal villages and schools in semi- urban areas of Kolkata; we have reached out to other districts like North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly.
Mrs. Mina Shaw, aged 36 years, is the wife of Mr. Hare Krishna Shaw who is a street hawker. They are the residents of 6, Banerjee Bagan slum area under Kamarhati Municipality in the district of North 24 Parganas. The monthly income of the family being Rs. 2,700/- only, and with four mouths to feed, they are constantly in a poor economic condition. To support the family, she has also started stitching and tailoring works. Her insufficient vision created many problems in her stitching work, adding to a distress as her customers always complained of poor tailoring work. With the constant pressure of earning money and sustaining the family, she could not get her eyes tested; neither could she afford a pair of spectacles.
In spite of poor vision she forced herself to continue her work and earn her livelihood. After she got to know about the free eye- camp conducted by GKB Opticals, she attended the camp with the hope that her eyes will get checked. She was diagnosed with poor vision in the distance as well as in near.
She was overwhelmed to receive her first pair of spectacles a few weeks after the eye- check up. With all gratitude, she is thankful to the GKB Opticals for the eye- camp, that has changed her situation around and she has been getting many more orders from her customers who are no longer complaining.
“Being a daily-labor in the village fields, I need to work from morning to evening. Since two years, I could not work properly, as I was unable to see properly. Due to lack of money, I could not visit a doctor. The day I heard about the eye- camp organized by GKB Opticals, I went for my eye- check up. I am thankful for providing me with a pair of spectacles. I am able to work in a better way and earn my living.”
Sandhya Bayen, Madhubati village, Diamond Harbour.
“I work as a security guard in an NGO. I was suffering from eye irritation and short sightedness caused by age. I was checked up at the eye camp organized by the CSR department of GKB Opticals and was diagnosed with bi-focal power on both his eyes. Now I am using the glasses provided by GKB Opticals and has got an improved sight. Thanks to GKB Opticals’ CSR Programme!”

They are a few among 4,100 people who have been checked and have received spectacles in the 115 free eye- camps organized by GKB Opticals from September, 2014 to January, 2016.
There is still a long way to go and we aim at eradicating vision related problems among the economically marginalized sections of the society. GKB Opticals will continue to strive towards achieving better eye health among the marginalized sections of the society.
